2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Era of the Croaking Craze.

While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Given that a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Amphibians have been not at all new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. But, their visibility has seemingly surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are serious Frog Games.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To quantify this trend, I performed a detailed review into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The findings tell a compelling story: a marked increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's rising status in the broader culture is partially evident elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the trend in gaming seems especially strong.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs offer built-in appealing traits for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that often become a highlight in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues lend themselves to a host of innovative control schemes.

A number of the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the biggest year so far.

When these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be witnessing a full-blown frog gaming renaissance.
