The White House confirmed the start of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official procedure for letting employees go.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services used by the public and vowed to contest the actions in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver critical services to the public nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the news, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is not expected to be ended before then.

At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican bill, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, unions sought a temporary restraining order to block the government from carrying out any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge ordered the government to provide specifics on layoff plans, affected agencies, and whether any federal employees had been brought back to execute layoffs.

A report argued that a government shutdown limits the ability of the administration to conduct terminations, citing guidance that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations occurred on the very day that government employees got only a partial paycheck covering the final days of September but excluding the beginning of October, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the period.

Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate stated. “Our flight regulators, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
