Doris Secures Spot in Irish Team But McCarthy Misses Out

Ireland rugby squad selection news

Newly reappointed manager Andy Farrell has included captain Caelan Doris in his Irish team for the fall internationals, but lock McCarthy has been excluded.

Doris, absent from play since having shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, but it remains unclear whether he will be ready to play against the All Blacks in the US on 1 November.

Lock McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue he sustained during the opening Lions match against the Wallabies in the summer.

Northern province player Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Nash are also absent due to injury, and full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation after the Lions tour.

Dublin province prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new member in the 34-man squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union states uncapped Munster duo Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped Connacht wing Shayne Bolton will travel to Chicago as "cover".

Following facing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a repeat of their 2016 encounter, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world title holders the Springboks in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the squad and there's an opportunity for the more experienced players and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to Georgia and Portugal," said Farrell, who returns to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to coach the Lions tour to Australia.

In a mostly familiar-looking selection, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will again compete for the first-choice fly-half position. The number 10 jersey is remains available, as the two players poised to play against each other for the first time in Saturday's URC game at Croke Park.

Ciaran Frawley is the third number 10 chosen with the coach opting against selecting Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has picked Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who led the national side to the summer international victories over Georgia and the Lobos. There is also a recall for the western province's Blade, chosen to teammate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey represent an veteran group of centre options. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, but the youngster is also a frontrunner to deputise for Keenan at full-back.

Wingers James Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are included. O'Brien shone on his first Ireland outings over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over Georgia and the Lobos.

Paddy McCarthy is the only new name in the Ireland forwards. The front rower has been in two of his province's three league matches this season and played in Ireland A's loss by the English in Bristol earlier this year.

McCarthy was included in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not receive a cap.

Munster second row Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those Tests, is retained, while experienced Ulster second row Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer tour.

Conan, who started each of the Lions matches over the summer, is poised to cover for Doris should the skipper does not regain full fitness in time to play the All Blacks.

The national team will meet in the capital on Monday before traveling to the US on Tuesday.
