Much like bad weather tore through the northern region the night before, Manchester City swept Manchester United aside at the Etihad. It was a statement 3-0 triumph for the City coach's side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their championship potential as they strengthened their position at the top of the table.

Successive Defeats for United

This scoreline signalled successive Women's Super League setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the initial occasion since last May, putting them a sizable gap off the league leaders with their title hopes in serious doubt.

United’s ability to manage league and continental football with a small squad has been a hotly discussed issue since they qualified for the Champions League. Looking at the calendar, it always felt like this was the matchday that would fully examine this ability. Unfortunately for the away side, they appeared fatigued from start to finish, the landmark win against PSG clearly having left its mark.

Tactical Shifts

The United manager had sought to rotate the squad with a a few adjustments. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all brought energy, although the omission of the on-form Malard to the substitutes raised a few eyebrows.

Manchester City, in contrast, have fewer loading worries. Andrée Jeglertz made one adjustment from the previous win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her return to the lineup since recovering from a physical setback.

Commanding Opening Period

Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came nearest, striking the upright, but the away team were lacking in ideas and did not manage to register a solitary shot on target.

The hosts, in contrast, could have extended their lead when a delightful Vivianne Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it mattered little to the hosts. Having failed to overcome any side who finished above them in the prior term, the manager's side now have victories against the Gunners and United to position them in a commanding standing after nine games.
