Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
