Several Hurt as Turbulence Impacts A Delta Airlines Flight into Sydney

Multiple passengers and crew were hurt when a Delta Airlines aircraft traveling from Los Angeles to Sydney, Australia experienced turbulence on Friday morning.

Delta Flight 41 "experienced a brief period of turbulence" as it landed at Sydney Airport, a representative for the carrier told. A number of the onboard staff required medical attention.

Emergency medical services reported they evaluated a total of five people, and took three of them to a medical facility with minor injuries that comprised pain in the back and head pain. The injured were between their thirties and seventies.

It is the newest example of commercial jets experiencing turbulence, with researchers indicating that shifting climate patterns is a key driver.

The aircraft was carrying 245 passengers and fifteen staff members on the wide-body jet, the Delta spokesperson added, stating that the plane touched down "safely and normally" at the airport at shortly before 7 a.m. on Friday morning.

The NSW Ambulance Service reported they got a call just a mere three minutes prior to the plane arrived, and ambulances were waiting on the tarmac.

Why plane turbulence is becoming more frequent - and more severe.

In the previous year, two dozen individuals were injured when a separate Delta aircraft, flying from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, Netherlands, encountered "considerable" atmospheric disturbance just two hours into the transoceanic journey, and had to make an precautionary landing.

Earlier this year, travelers and staff on a certain international flight endured a terrifying short but intense bout of severe turbulence. A traveler lost their life and many were hurt, as individuals not fastened in lifted out of their seats and crashed back down.

Turbulence is not uncommon on aircraft journeys, and while instances of rough conditions seem to be rising, they are statistically infrequent.

Data suggests that there are around 5,000 incidents of severe-or-greater turbulence each year, out of a sum of over 35 million flights that are conducted worldwide.

Intense turbulence is defined as when the sudden jolts of a jet experiencing rough air masses generate in excess of a significant G-force on your body - a strong enough force to lift you out of your seat if you weren't wearing a restraint.

As a changing climate shifts the conditions in the sky, specialists caution that flying could become bumpier: temperature changes and altered air currents in the higher altitudes are projected to heighten the occurrence and strength of severe turbulence.
