A recent study indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using such treatments should be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.
"It was like something that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
